First Trimester Nausea Tips

Eat healthy.

Exercise.

Drink lots of water.

Take your prenatal vitamin.

Yeah, okay that’s all fine and dandy when your body wants to cooperate. There are those lucky few who experience zero adverse side-affects of pregnancy. They truly don’t know how good they really have it. And if you’re an odd ball like me, evenings are the worst. That’s when my stomach would hurt extremely bad and I’d be the most nauseous, tired and crabby.

As I write this, I’m 18 weeks along. My appetite isn’t back, but I don’t feel as ‘off’ and sick as I did in the last few weeks. As I Googled and searched there wasn’t one article that just said, “just drink the Coke if that helps you make it through the day.” I wanted to share some tips I found from other moms who shared their first-trimester advice. Because if you’re like me a salad just makes you puke, literally, at this point. And yeah, it does make you feel like you’re doing this all wrong since you only want cereal and Coke.

**And no, I am not a doctor, nurse, nutritionist, dietitian or anything of the sort. Heck, at this point I’m only a dog mom. These are just tips to help you make it through the first trimester if the ole’ ‘have some ginger’ trick isn’t working.

  • With that being said, first up are all things ginger. This little root plant does help many women. There are different forms: Ginger Ale, ginger tea and ginger chews, to name a few.
  • Sea bands
  • Mint (essential oil)
  • Lemon (fresh and essential oil)
  • Soluble Fiber – eating a 1/2 cup of beans
  • Coke or Pepsi – couple sips here and there
  • NOT eating fresh vegetables
  • Unisom and Vitamin B6 – take these together. I found it helped me most if I took them at night.
  • Carbs on carbs on carbs – need I say any more?
  • Just let the dry heaving happen
  • Seriously eating every two hours – stock up on the saltine crackers
  • Drink water, but not too much
  • Don’t push yourself – there were a few nights where I MADE myself go for a walk. The walk did not make me feel any better. It only made me feel worse.
  • Take your multivitamin at night
  • Supplement Magnesium
  • Lastly, talk to your doctor about the potential for acid reflux

Please bear in mind this is not meant to be official medical advice. As I mentioned before, I hope it reassures you that you aren’t the only one who wasn’t helped by the ginger, but maybe saw benefit from eating more soluble fiber. And so that you aren’t like me and feel guilty for now drinking Coke when you never used to drink it.

  1. Thank you for this! I’m first trimestering it up as we speak and the morning sickness is HORRIBLE! I don’t even feel like I’m a real person. The B6 chews I have helped a little but they aren’t a cure all. On to try a few of your suggestions. Fingers crossed!
